This program will teach participants the foundations of mathematical modeling and responsible AI use through classes and hands-on activities involving data collection, graph theory, computer simulation, optimization, and sensitivity analysis. Participants will work in groups to design and test strategies for an emergency building sweep, use AI to support their reasoning while making their own decisions, and present their recommendations in a modeling report and final presentation.
Participants will experience how mathematics and AI can be used together to investigate complex real-world problems that may have several reasonable solutions. This program will spark an appreciation for the usefulness of mathematics while developing your ability to question assumptions, verify AI-generated information, and evaluate the strengths and limitations of a model.
Professor Wang
Jiayuan Wang teaches calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and probability and statistics. She designs and leads the Future Makers Lab for Calculus II, which combines mathematical modeling, engineering design, and makerspace tools to deepen conceptual understanding and foster creativity in STEM.
